Middle School Social Studies
Welcome to Middle School Social Studies! I first came to Saint Michael School in 1994 as a fifth grade homeroom teacher responsible for teaching Social Studies to grade 5-8. My classroom for the first year was where the pre-K classroom is currently located. As they added more grades, I was moved across the street to the old red school building with grades 3 and 4 and became the Social Studies teacher for grades 4-5 and the fifth grade homeroom. When the new school was built, I moved into the room that is now grade 5B and have been there since 2012 when I stepped up to Middle School and 6B homeroom teacher.
Education is the key to our future and experience and understanding are the keys to education. Students’ comprehension grows if they can experience a subject matter themselves. An experience is something that truthfully happens and which can be shared and understood. My role as educator is to demonstrate how lessons learned today are taken into real life tomorrow. Students must comprehend the entire concept being instructed. Lessons in my class are activity oriented which allows students to take an active role in their learning and by actively taking part they explore and eventually discover new experiences. They will begin to be self-directed and motivated.
Students in my class are encouraged to express their views on a given topic. My role is to guide them through the discussions by asking higher level questions. They will begin to understand that opinions need to be supported and that everyone has different opinions and that all opinions must be respected. These discussions lead to new experiences and understanding of the subject matter and the environment in which they live.
Teachers cannot be the sole educators of students. Student’s education is influenced by everyone and everything. If students are to grow into responsible adults, they need to see, understand, and experience responsibility. Education is so much more than reading, writing, and math taught by a teacher. Education needs to be well-rounded and requires the help of every person. I feel that it is my responsibility as an educator to provide a learning environment in which all students can develop academically, socially, and spiritually.
Peace and God Bless,
